]]><![CDATA[OMG! Ubuntu! the victim of a massive DDoS attack]]>Mon, 04 Apr 2011 03:41:13 GMThttp://www.ohso.co/1/post/2011/04/omg-ubuntu-the-victim-of-a-massive-ddos-attack.htmlOn Sunday, 3rd April at around midday UTC time, we noticed a huge increase in Apache requests on our server that runs OMG! Ubuntu!

Whereas a normal day would average around 170 requests per minute, we were seeing up to 1,000 requests per minute, averaging at around 700.

The attack was from dozens of random IP addresses which accessed seemingly random valid URLs on the site causing the CPU to overload, and as such the server could not handle genuine traffic.

The DDoS attack lasted for around 10 hours before it finally ceased. We believe it was the work of a botnet hired out by somebody who has a gripe with OMG! Ubuntu!

Due to the nature of the attack, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to find out who the attacker was, but we are now working on preparing the server for any future attacks so our down time isn't affected as much as it was yesterday.

To the attackers: We don't know who you are, or why you'd want to take down OMG! Ubuntu! but grow up and stop being childish. If you have a gripe with us, be an adult and tell us rather than cause unnecessary disruption. ]]><![CDATA[Volley Brawl released into Software Center for Maverick, Natty]]>Wed, 30 Mar 2011 22:23:09 GMThttp://www.ohso.co/1/post/2011/03/volley-brawl-released-into-software-center-for-maverick-natty.htmlI’m happy to announce that Volley Brawl is finally available for everyone to try!

It’s just hit the Software Center for Maverick and Natty, right on time to meet the March 31st release date (unless you live in the USA, where it’s still March 30th – but due to timezones and all that, we can’t please everyone!)

All you have to do is open up the Software Center and navigate to the “For Purchase” section.

It’ll only knock you back the price of a pair of socks, and I believe that the Software Center sadly only accepts credit card payments (sorry, no PayPal!) at this point.

Remember that by buying Volley Brawl, you’ll not only be getting a very fun game, but you’ll also be supporting OMG! Ubuntu! as we get a slice of every transaction.

Ubuntu!

You may have noticed the strange half-circle creatures appear in our sidebar over the past few days, as well as make appearances in a few teaser videos. And if you’re a fan of OMG! Ubuntu!’s Facebook page, you’ll certainly be familiar with these “brawlers!”

We’ve got a few copies of the game to give away for free. It’s really, really easy to enter – all you have to do is suggest a new character in the comments section.

If you have some design skills, you’re more than welcome to upload an image of your idea, too.

The top 3 “most liked” ideas in the comments will win a free copy of the game each, and they’ll also be the first three new “brawlers” to land in Volley Brawl’s content update in April.

If you have an idea that wins, but haven’t created your own brawler, our resident artist Tommy Brunn (who has made all the ones in the game so far) will make up your idea for you.

Ubuntu Gamer extends the Ohso network of sites even further, but this time specializing in gaming on Ubuntu. You will probably notice that a lot of elements bare a very close similarity to OMG! Ubuntu! – this is entirely on purpose. We have re-used a lot of the code for Ubuntu Gamer to make sure it has that consistent Ohso network feel.

So why should you visit Ubuntu Gamer? We have…

Ed is a 19 year old UK student studying computer networking. A self proclaimed gaming geek and Ubuntu lover, he’s fully in the know and up to date with the state of gaming on Ubuntu. For those of you who read Full Circle Magazine, you might recognize Ed as the writer for the gaming column.

Tommy Brunn
Tommy is a Swedish student studying IT, but also an independent game developer. In combination with his partner in crime, Bart van Strien, they will be responsible for a lot of the games that come out of the Ohso software factory. Tommy brings an excellent insight into the back-end of software development on Ubuntu, and his articles will provide an interesting look “behind the scenes” of making games on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu! no doubt you'll notice something different. That's right, after two months of design and development, we have unleashed the new face of OMG! Ubuntu!
 
So what's new?

The site is now on wordpress instead of blogger and on a dedicated new server, which means it's much faster, and we have a lot more flexibility when it comes to formatting of posts and customizing the layout and style to truly give it that OMG! feel.

There's an entirely new design that brings in elements of the new Ubuntu branding, and also sets the standard for the new websites that Ohso will be opening up over the next few months.

The new design features a much nicer category, tag and search system to make it easy to find older posts, a custom set of icons, new sidebar widgets, a new colour pallete, lovely static pages and a beautiful footer that all combine to make this site something unique.

The design was done by me and later on I'll be going into detail examining some of the new aspects of the design, decisions we had to make and unique features that makes this website something we're really pleased with.

In case you didn't notice, the new website is over 3x faster than the old one! Niall Molloy, our ace web developer and optimization ninja has worked long and hard making sure that this website is one of the fastest around.

Niall also uses the new CSS3 standard to give lovely fading rollovers and other assorted details, so if you're using Firefox 4 or Google Chrome you can enjoy these.

Niall will be talking about the code behind the site in a later post, including the challenge of transferring nearly 2000 posts with links and comments intact from one provider to another.

We're pretty new on the scene and haven't articulated all of our combobulators or configured the stuff expander, so expect things to change over the next few weeks.

Who are we? We're Joey and Benjamin, a pom and a kiwi in our early 20s who are trying to make cool shit using the power of open source. Every so often we'll post a wee article about something here, when we're launching a new product or perhaps if we just want to admire this font in large paragraphs.
