Ubuntu!Whereas a normal day would average around 170 requests per minute, we were seeing up to 1,000 requests per minute, averaging at around 700.The attack was from dozens of random IP addresses which accessed seemingly ran [...] ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<div  class="paragraph editable-text" style=" text-align: left; ">On Sunday, 3rd April at around midday UTC time, we noticed a huge increase in Apache requests on our server that runs <a href="http://omgubuntu.co.uk/" target="_blank" title="">OMG! Ubuntu!</a><br /><br />Whereas a normal day would average around 170 requests per minute, we were seeing up to 1,000 requests per minute, averaging at around 700.<br /><br />The attack was from dozens of random IP addresses which accessed seemingly random valid URLs on the site causing the CPU to overload, and as such the server could not handle genuine traffic.<br /><br />The DDoS attack lasted for around 10 hours before it finally ceased. We believe it was the work of a botnet hired out by somebody who has a gripe with OMG! Ubuntu!<br /><br />Due to the nature of the attack, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to find out who the attacker was, but we are now working on preparing the server for any future attacks so our down time isn't affected as much as it was yesterday.<br /><br />To the attackers: We don't know who you are, or why you'd want to take down OMG! Ubuntu! but grow up and stop being childish. A self proclaimed gaming geek and Ubuntu lover, he&rsquo;s fully in the know and up to date with the state of gaming on Ubuntu. For those of you who read Full Circle Magazine, you might recognize Ed as the writer for the gaming column.<br /><br /><strong>Tommy Brunn</strong></span><br /><span style="color: rgb(79, 79, 79); font-family: 'Droid Sans', Ubuntu, UbuntuBeta, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; ">Tommy is a Swedish student studying IT, but also an independent game developer. In combination with his partner in crime, Bart van Strien, they will be responsible for a lot of the games that come out of the Ohso software factory. Ubuntu!</span></font><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">&nbsp;</span></font><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">So what's new?</span></font><br /><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">The site is now on wordpress instead of blogger and on a dedicated new server, which means it's much faster, and we have a lot more flexibility when it comes to formatting of posts and customizing the layout and style to truly give it that OMG! feel.</span></font><br /><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">There's an entirely new design that brings in elements of the new Ubuntu branding, and also sets the standard for the new websites that Ohso will be opening up over the next few months.</span></font><br /><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">The new design features a much nicer category, tag and search system to make it easy to find older posts, a custom set of icons, new sidebar widgets, a new colour pallete, lovely static pages and a beautiful footer that all combine to make this site something unique.</span></font><br /><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">The design was done by me and later on I'll be going into detail examining some of the new aspects of the design, decisions we had to make and unique features that makes this website something we're really pleased with.</span></font><br /><br /><font color="#333333" size="4"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">In case you didn't notice, the new website is over 3x faster than the old one!
